        History

        Joe Rainey emigrated to Victoria, B.C. with his family from County Antrim, Northern Ireland in 1913 at the age of 13. He was hired by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1917 as a deckhand and worked his way up to quarter master before retiring from the ships in 1937. He served on most of the C.P.R. coastl ships including Victoria, Adelaide, Maquinna, Sophia, Alice, Elaine, Joan, Kathleen, and Marguerite as well as on deep sea vessels Empress of Asia and Empress of China. Joe passed awa in 1983.
