Administrative history
Originally a Victoria-based towing company established by Harold Elworthy in 1924, the company acquired the large towing vessel Sudbury, a converted corvette, in 1954 that was BC’s most famous tug. It acquired another towing company, Young & Gore, in 1965 and Victoria Tug Company in 1958. McAllister Towing of Montreal purchased Island Tug in 1960 and then, in 1961, Griffiths Steamship Company. In 1969, Genstar Ltd. acquired Island Tug & Barge and in 1970 merged Vancouver Tug Boat Company and Island Tug to become Seaspan International.

Fonds consists of reports on the salvage operations conducted by Island Tug & Barge Company Vessels.
- Report on the salvage of M/V Lefkipos, 15 March 1966. Incomplete (missing)
- Report on the salvage of the freighter SS Georgidore, by the salvage vessel Sudbury II, 30 October 1959. Also includes copy of Lloyd’s Standard Form of Salvage Agreement, dated 31 October 1959, a chart, some photographs, and copy of “Salvage Ships at Work” pamphlet.
- Report salvage operations SS Tonsina, 20 January 1965.
- Report on the salvage of the Packer Seamaid, 11 October 1960.
- Report on the salvage of the freighter S.S. Makedonia by the salvage vessel SS Sudbury, 12 December 1955. Also includes copy of Lloyd’s Standard Form of Salvage Agreement, copies of SS Sudbury chief officer’s log book, and S.S. Sudbury chief engineer’s log book.
- Report on the salvage of SS Glafkos, 1 January 1962. Also includes copy of Lloyd’s Standard Form of Salvage Agreement, dated 4 January 1962, a sequence of events chart, photographs, and a copy of “Salvage Ships at Work” pamphlet.
Also includes 6 scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings dating from 1946 to 1948 and 1952 o 1961 and 6 albums containing an index for the Island Tug & Barge negative cabinet.
