Heater Family Fonds

Fonds consists of black and white photographs and associated negatives collected by Joan Goddard from a family photo album of the Heater family. The photographs date from 1890 to 1911 and chronicle the sealing trade on the west coast, and contain images of the sealing industry as seen through the eyes of George Heater.

Also includes two fixed assets ledgers, I and II, dating from 1918 to 1962.

Fonds consists of letters from Captain George Hutingford to his wife dating from November 1892 to March 1896, including descriptions of the West Coast of Canada ca. 1892, life in the Royal Navy, and the movements of the HMS Nymphe on the California coast, Mexico, and South America. Contains approximately 400 letters, and a family tree provided by the donor.

Also includes the naval papers belonging to Captain George Huntingford, Royal Navy including the movements of HMS Nymphe from December 1892 to March 1896 and three letters dating to November 1892.

Fonds consists of documents relating to the professional life of William White including records of his service as ship’s steward’s boy starting in 1854 aboard HMS Lyra serving in East Africa and records of his service on HMS Scout from 1870 to 1875 while stationed in Esquimalt.

Also includes records pf his service on HMS Cumberland, Medusa, Agincourt, Revenge, Wizard, and Hibernia including letters of recommendations from captains, a shipping list from the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1872, a British Columbia license to sell and retail trader, a personal letter from a captain to White’s mother, and two certificates of De Lessepps’ Panama Canal dating to 1893.

Also includes several photographs of White, including one with his wife and 10 children in 1902.
