Fonds consists of documents and memorabilia related to the personal and professional lives of Commander G.R. MacFarlane and John Macfarlane including documents collected during their time in naval training and during their careers as well as documents and ephemera collected during their travels.

George R. MacFarlane's collection consists of documents including notes, certificates of service, biographical information, medical records, records of examinations, reports, Canadian Forces Base, Esquimalt constitutions and by-laws, maps, charts, and correspondence dating from 1946 to the 1970s. Also includes identity cards and a war service badge dated 1998.

Also includes a booklet titled "Notes on Court Martial Procedure" published by the office of the deputy judge advocate with an 1956 HMCS Stettler stamp and three copies of a form titled "Particulars Respecting Candidate for Acting Sub-Lieutenant", revised November, 1933. Form has not been filled out.

John MacFarlane's collection consists of documents, exercise books, photographs, and memorabilia primarily related to John MacFarlane's time as a naval cadet in the 1960s including correspondence, naval messages, cards and invitations, receipts, leave request and authorization forms, notebooks, and general training documents. Also includes travel memorabilia from B.C. Ferries dating to the 1990s including tickets, baggage tags, and dinner menus, and ephemera related to the Holland American Line.

Also includes assorted naval memorabilia dating to the 1950s and 1960s including a Barry's Salmon label, a 1957 price list, a fishing licence, a list of steam launch operators, a programme for the annual inspection of RCSCC Rainbow, an instruction manual for basic slide rules, several hand drawn charts, a mariners compass, assorted tickets, a book of comics titled "Eod Antics" by Pholcox, a booklet celebrating 60 years of RCSCC Rainbow, commissioning booklets for HMCS Chaleur, Fundy, Thunder, Chignecto, naval cap tallies booklet volume 1, and a picture book of ships.

Also includes handwritten auditor general's reports from 1896 to 1897, 1914, 1930, and 1938; HMCS Stettler Dependents Day Cruise programme from 2 August 1957, a letter from the Department of National Defense from 15 July 1968, and Royal Sealink Express safety procedures.

Also includes a book titled "Navigators and Shipwrecks: Australia's Heritage in Stamps", published 1985 consisting of a complete stamp set slipped into sleeve in front of book. As well as an envelope addressed to Mrs. Kathleen MacFarlane, from the Navy Department dated 1961, a blank pad of Island Tug & Barge Limited time-slips, a blank pad of Department of Defence sight forms, a draft handbook on oceanography Northeast Pacific Ocean by Dr. L.F. Giovando, a 1989 calendar with John M. MacFarlane stamped onto front, and assorted business cards, photographs, labels from tinned salmon, postcards featuring images of various vessels, and some envelopes.

Also includes a document titled "Some Naval Customs and Social Practices" by Lieutenant-Commander F.E. Grubb, R.N.C., correspondence related to the British cemetery on San Juan Island, a booklet titled "Royal Tour of Canada 1959", a Maritime Museum newsletter from May 1992, and a newspaper clipping regarding Maritime Museum.

Fonds consists of miscellaneous papers and photos relating to the work of George Phillips at HMC Dockyard, Esquimalt naval stores, his service during World War I, and arctic expeditions.

Fonds includes two Department of Naval Services inspection reports for HMC Dockyards, Halifax and Esquimalt prepared by George Phillips and 11 Department of Naval Services folders containing documents relating to the operation of the naval stores dating from 1917-1922. as well as photocopies of correspondence between George Phillips, V. Stefansson, Mrs. R.M. Anderson, Mrs. Murray, and G.J. Desbarats dating from 1913 to 1915.

Fonds also includes miscellaneous ephemeral related to the Royal Canadian Navy including two issues of "The Naval Volunteer" Magazine dating to December 1915 and January 1916, a Royal Naval Club, Esquimalt account book dating from October 1896 to 31 October 1911, a small painting of HMS Shearwater c. 1911, a pencil drawing of a fireplace with specs c. 1931, a handwritten letter in envelope dated 1912, and a Seattle press club visitor's card for Mr. G. Phillips.

Also includes a small booklet containing information about Canadian Pacific Steamships and a passenger list for the Empress of Scotland sailing from Quebec to Cherbourg and Southampton Wednesday 18 July 1928 as well as a diner menu for Tuesday 24 July 1928 and a lunch menu for Wednesday 25 July 1928. The menus are postcards on the reverse and were collected as souvenirs of a voyage taken by Miss J. Phillips.
