Fonds consists of the personal and professional papers of Lieutenant Commander James D. Laurie. Includes his cadet second class graduation diploma, naval appointments, and orders, certificates, letters of references, and correspondence, dating from 1913 to 1949 as well as documents and correspondence related to insurance policy, pension payments, and adjustments, dating from 1933 to 1958. Also includes a handwritten letter and envelope recovered by divers from the wreck of SS Empress of Ireland, a Christmas card with a picture of an unidentified military band, and a photo album that should contain approximately 100 negatives of pictures taken during a cruise of HMS Berwick from February 1913 to February 1914 but, as of May 2016, all the negatives are missing.

Also includes a journal and note book for the use of junior officers, kept by Midshipman Laurie on HMS Niobe beginning 27 August 1914. The journal includes some coloured detail drawings of ship parts and the dust jacket is actually a map folded over the cover.

The fonds consists of baptismal certificate (1971), certificates of character (1893-1910) of the Royal Navy, letter of reference, papers from the Admiralty, papers regarding James' acceptance into the Royal Canadian Navy, and a short resume of his naval career to 1903.

Fonds consists of a Sons of the Sea initiation certificate for M/V Moveria dated 8 October 1935, and 7 photo albums consisting of photographs of vessels organized into the categories naval vessels, fishing vessels, passenger and freight vessels, ferries and government vessels, tugs, and dockyards around Vancouver Island. Also included are 47 loose album pages.

Fonds also includes an oak box contains mostly photographs from 1963 to 1967 of ships in Victoria. There are a mix of naval vessels, coast guard ships, and various vessels in local shipyards, including Island Tug and Barge.

Fonds consists of documents related to the WWII service of Lt. John M. Leeming, RCNVR including his identification card, correspondence, programme from the Royal Navy Presents "Pacific Show Boat", a report on certain incidents which occurred on board HMCS Athabaskan, Cresent, and Magnificent, and a booklet titled "Back to Civil Life".
