Victoria Sealing Company Limited

Joint stock company established in 1898 out of the Victoria Shipping Owners and Masters Sealers Association that had been formed in 1889. Sealing schooner owners contributed their vessels to the company. Its first shareholders were William Grant, Thomas Earle, John G. Cox, William Munsie, Richard Hall, A.J. Bechtel, and R. Seabrook. It was disbanded in 1925.

Wooden, four-masted barquetine built by Cholberg Shipyard in Victoria West as part of a WWI emergency construction program. She was owned by Victoria Ship owners Ltd. of Victoria, and in 1921, acquired by the Canadian Government Merchant Marine when Victoria Ship owners went bankrupt. In 1921, she was traded to Australia. In 1923, she was sold to British Columbia Mills Timber and Trading Company (Hastings Mill) in Vancouver, laid up in New Westminster, and converted to a floating herring saltery by Nelson Brothers. She was then laid up in Annacis Slough and later converted to a log barge by Green Brothers. She broke loose from her moorings at Ogden Point, Victoria in December 1923 and wrecked on Macaulay Point.

The Canadian Department of Transport was established on 2 November 1936 through the merger of the Department of Marine, Department of Railways and Canals, and the Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of National Defense. It had a wide span of operational responsibilities. In addition to its railway and civil aviation responsibilities, the Department of Transport was responsible for the coasts including the management of lighthouses, management of harbours, inspection of steamboats, and registration of shipping. A 1994 federal government reorganization created Transport Canada, a department focused on policy and regulation rather that transportation operation. The Coast Guard was transferred to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans at the time.

Wooden single-screw steamer, 291 tons gross. She was built in the United Kingdom and owned and operated by the Hudson's Bay Company. She was purchased by Canadian Pacific Navigating Company in 1883, converted into barge, and broken up in 1890. She was the first propeller-driven steamer on the North Pacific.
