John Kirkendale worked as a deckhand on towboats at the early age of 15. During WWII, he was an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy, serving as navigating officer in corvettes and minesweepers in the Atlantic. By the end of the war he was a Lieutenant, RCNR. He later served as first mate on the Estevan and other vessels. John enjoyed building various ships and restoring them, notably the 68 foot D'Arcy Isle. The Kriegsmarine was the navy of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945. It superseded the Imperial German Navy of the German Empire (1871-1918) and the inter-war Reichsmarine (1919-1935) of the Weimar Republic. The Kriegsmarine was one of three official branches, along with the Heer (Army) and the Luftwaffe (Air Force), of the Wehrmacht, the armed forces of National Socialist / Nazi Germany (1933-1945).

Mr. Kung worked for CPR's BC Coast Steamship Service for 50 years, retiring in 1975. Starting as a mess boy, he eventually became chief cook, and service on virtually every Coast Service Princess ship during his years with the company.
