The Royal Navy School of Navigation was opened in Portsmouth in 1906 and given the name of one of the sea-going tenders assigned to the school, the gunboat Dryad. The school moved at various times but from 1941 was located at Southwick Park, a requisitioned estate outside Portsmouth. Dryad later expanded to include the School of Maritime Warfare. Both were moved to HMS Collingwood
