Founded in 1902, and operating near the port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, RDM was a major shipyard that provided shipbuilding and engineering services to the Netherlands and abroad. At the beginning of the second world war, the Drydock company soon became interested in weapons production, and continued operation through Nazi occupation.

Born in England, he moved to Calgary at Age 11. Joined Navy in December 1916, at Esquimalt. Demobilized in 191, he returned to Calgary. "Restless" harbour partial tug, anchored at entrance of harbour for examination of ships. Assigned shored shore duty on board the HMCS Rainbow and, finally HMCS Galiano.
