One of the oldest and largest shipping companies in the world. By the 1920s the company was operating regular passenger and cargo ship services linking Japan and Vancouver and Seattle, Southeast Asia, the Indies, and Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Now known widely as NYK. After losing all but one of its vessels in WWII, NYK re-emerged and now operates worldwide.

Frederic James was born in Worcester, England, and served 27 years at sea, both in the mercantile marine and the Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy. He served as the Harbour Master in Hong Kong from 1901 to 1903. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War I.

Born in England, Edward Izard started working for Yarrows Shipbuilders in Scotland at the age of 18 and was trained in then new technologies including marine turbines. He came to Esquimalt in 1914 as the assistant manager when the shipyard had been purchased by Sir Alfred Yarrow. Edward Izard became General Manager and remained with the shipyard until 1957.
